Department of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka

Thalassotherapia Opatija is home to the Department of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka. Through the Department, we connect clinical practice, university teaching, professional development and research. Students gain knowledge and experience in a real clinical environment while working with patients, athletes and multidisciplinary teams.

University Specialist Study Programme in Sports and Rehabilitation Medicine

The programme responds to the needs of modern sport: protecting athletes' health, preventing injuries, preparing for athletic performance and providing rehabilitation. It brings together medicine, kinesiology, public health, psychology, nutrition and other fields, with an emphasis on evidence-based work and contemporary technologies. The first cohort completed the programme in September 2024, and the second cohort enrolled in 2025.

Teaching bases

Thalassotherapia Opatija is a teaching base for:

• the Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka
• the Faculty of Health Studies, University of Rijeka
• the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek
• the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka (since October 2025)

Students and trainees learn about the organisation of cardiac rehabilitation, the work of a multidisciplinary team, functional-capacity assessment, individual exercise prescription, and nutritional and psychological approaches to patient care.
